A 35-year-old man arrested by police under prohibition act,attempted suicide in police lock-up by hanging himself on Tuesday evening. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where his condition is reported to be out of danger.
According to police,Kanti Patel,a resident of Rajagri village in Choryasi taluka of Surat was caught by police after he was found heavily drunk and was found quarrelling with people in the village,on Tuesday afternoon.
Kanti was arrested under prohibition act by Ichhapore police and was later taken to New Civil hospital for medical examination. During evening,he tired to commit suicide by hanging himself with the bed sheet in the police lock-up. The police station operator Ambhu Virji spotted him hanging in the lock-up. Without wasting any time,Virji untied the knot and took Kanti to the nearby Adarsh hospital for treatment.
After primary treatment,Kanti was declared out of danger. Ichhapore police inspector S K Ambegaokar said Kanti was working as a casual labourer at different places in Hazira. We are trying to find out the reason which had driven him to take such a drastic step,he said.
