The Gujarat High Court has granted 15 days’ temporary bail to Jayesh Thakkar, one of the main accused of the 2009 Ahmedabad hooch tragedy,on medical grounds. A vacation bench of the HC comprising Justice G R Udhwani passed an order in this regard on Wednesday, while acting on a petition moved by Thakkar as party-in-person.

Special public prosecutor for the case at the HC,Devang Vyas, said that Thakkar had sought 15 days’ bail on medical grounds and it was granted by the court.

More than 100 persons had fallen ill after consuming spurious liquor in Ahmedabad in July 2009.

According to the prosecution,Thakkar is one of the main accused and conspirators in the case who provided methanol to other accused to make the “low-cost liquor”.

Earlier,in 2011,Thakkar was granted regular bail by the HC. However, the state government had appealed against the HC order in Supreme Court and the apex court had cancelled the bail granted to Thakkar by the HC.

In a knee-jerk reaction to the hooch tragedy, the government had passed a bill proposing amendment to the Bombay Prohibition Act,while adding stringent punishment of death sentence for anyone involved in selling or making the poisonous ‘lattha’ (methanol-based country liquor).
