‘Garbage has been dumped here as our regular site (on the Chalala road) is closed. But we are now trying to clean this site (at Bhidya). It will take at least a week to clear the garbage dumped here’

IN Gujarat Tourism’s ‘Khushboo Gujarat Ki’ advertisement campaign, superstar Amitabh Bachahan invites the world to the state to breathe some fresh air while standing outside the Somnath temple located on the Arabian Sea coast in Junagadh district. But the beach at Bhidya near the temple has been turned into a garbage dumping site by the Veraval-Somnath Joint Nagarpalika.

Tonnes of garbage, including degradable and non-degradable,collected from the industrial town of Veraval and Somnath, have been dumped here by the local body.

Following in the local body’s footsteps,Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) and a private chemical firm have also started dumping garbage here.

Nagarpalika chief officer Ashwin Vyas said,“Garbage has been dumped here as our regular site (on the Chalala road) is closed. But we are now trying to clean this site (at Bhidya). It will take at least a week to clear the garbage dumped here.”

Admitting that GIDC,industrial cluster developed by the state government, and chemicals manufacturer Rayon are also reportedly using the shore as their dumping site,Vyas said,“We will serve them a notice in this regard.”
