The Ahmedabad Metropolitan Court on Saturday sent BJP legislator Dr Maya Kodnani and former VHP general secretary Jaydeep Patel to four-day police remand, following their arrest in connection with the 2002 riots.

Advocate Mitesh Amin appeared on behalf of Kodnani, while advocate Vijay Patel represented Patel. In an over-crowded courtroom,Special Public Prosecutor Sudhir Brahmbhatt mentioned the reasons for which the SIT had asked for police custody of the two for 14 days.

He said the SIT wanted to find out the source of the inflammable material and weapons the two had allegedly provided to the rioters. Besides, the SIT was also keen to investigate if the massacre was a pre-planned conspiracy and whether other political leaders were involved in it.

The SIT also wanted to recover the material, which was looted from the shops and residences of Muslims at Naroda Gam,Brahmbhatt added. After hearing the arguments of the defence and the prosecution, the court granted their police custody.

Meanwhile, supporters of the two leaders gathered outside the court premises, shouting slogans of Jai Shree Ram,as officials of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) produced the two before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate N A Ijner under tight security. A similar atmosphere was witnessed when the two were taken back.

Also, the Naroda Gam neighbourhood area, which has a predominant Sindhi population, kept the shutters down. The procession to mark the Sindhi festival Cheti Chand was also not taken out in a bid to register their protest against Kodnani’s arrest.

Kodnani is an accused in the Naroda Patiya and Naroda Gam massacre cases, while Patel is an accused in the Naroda Gam case. Kodnani is likely to be arrested in the Naroda Patiya case soon after her role in Naroda Gam is investigated. Eleven people were killed in the Naroda Gam massacre.
