Mehmedabad in Kheda district is the epicentre of the hooch tragedy, according to the Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB),as it was here where the deadly cocktail was brewed and then distributed in the city.
But according to the Mehmedabad police, their Ahmedabad counterparts are yet to furnish them with any information officially this even as the death toll has crossed the 100 figure mark. The official death toll is reported to be 113.
The DCB has said that the brew was concocted in breweries in villages of Mehmedabad allegedly by one Vinod Chauhan aka Tagdi,a notorious bootlegger, who is at large.
A DCB officer said: The spurious hooch that has wrecked havoc in Ahmedabad was brewed by Chauhan. Harishankar Kahar alias Hari Om and other city-based bootleggers, including Arvind Solanki, who died on the first day of the tragedy at Majoor Gam in Behrampura, had sourced the spurious brew from Chauhan and distributed it at liquor stands at several places in the city.
But a senior officer from Mehmedabad said: Whatever information we are getting is not official. We have not got any tip off from the Ahmedabad police.
He added: As far as the arrest of Vinu Dagdi from Vachhvadi village is concerned,he is certainly a local person, but he was not allowed to do business. We have checked his residence, but have not found a single evidence or clue which can prove his involvement in the incident. He is not even a wealthy person as we could find only a bike and a small house with stable. But he has about 30 bigha of land, which is again divided between his brothers.
Kheda Superintendent of Police Himanshu Shukla said that 183 bootleggers were arrested from Mehmedabad, but refused to say anything else.
When asked about role of Rasik Parmar,a local BJP member named by Congressmen reportedly involved in the spurious liquor supply,an officer said: All we know is that he was absent in the PASA review meetings since the past five months. Also,as per our information both his legs are fractured.
Meanwhile, the DCB arrested three more alleged bootleggers in connection with the case,on Thursday.
The trio, residents of Odhav area Himmatsinh Parmar (19),Vipul Luhar (20) and Uttam Luhar (20) reportedly worked for Kahar, whom the DCB had arrested on Wednesday night. A city court on Thursday night remanded Kahar to 14 days in police custody.
Parmar and the Luhar brothers, the DCB added, were arrested from their residences after Kahar named them during his interrogation.
The trio were working for Kahar for the past six months. They used to ferry hooch from Mehemdabad in Kheda district to Ahmedabad and later distribute it at various liquor stalls here on their scooters. We have also seized their scooters, said a DCB officer.
The DCB added that Kahar had named several more people during his interrogation and that more arrests in the case are likely. Parmar and the Luhar brothers will be produced before a city court for seeking police remand against them. More facts will open up during their interrogation, the officer added.
Meanwhile, the Mehamdabad police are crying foul over the lack of inputs from the Ahmedabad Crime Branch.
