Gujarat Parivartan Party(GPP) headed by former chief minister Keshubhai Patel suffered a serious setback when one of its two MLAs — Nalinbhai Kotadia from Dhari Assembly seat in Amreli district — began campaigning for BJP candidates in Porbandar Lok Sabha and Jetpur Assembly bypoll.

The only other GPP MLA is Keshubhai Patel himself. GPP has not fielded its candidates for bypolls for two Lok Sabha and four Assembly seats to be held on June 2.

However,it is not yet clear if Kotadia had struck any bargain with BJP and wanted to cross over to the ruling party. But as he was one of the two MLAs,he could not be disqualified from being MLAs because he represents 50 per cent of the total party’s legislators in the state Assembly.

GPP general secretary Gordhan Zadaphia said he was informed by the party workers in Porbandar and Jetpur that Kotadia had been campaigning for the BJP candidates. Zadaphia admitted that this amounted to breach of party discipline.

Zadaphia said he tried to contact Kotadia over phone but the latter did not pick up the call. “We are considering to take disciplinary action against him,” he stated.

However,he said besides Kotadia, the rank and file of GPP in Porbander and Amreli districts were with the party and nobody would go with him if Kotadia decided to join BJP. “The party workers will not join BJP with Kotadia,” he claimed.

This is not the first time when GPP leaders crossed over to BJP. Earlier, former MLA Sunil Oza had quit Zadaphia’s MahaGujarat Janata Party (MJP) and joined BJP a few month’s before December 2012 Lok Sabha elections. GPP is the new avatar of MJP. The party was renamed GPP on the insistence of Keshubhai Patel after he decided to challenge BJP in the last Assembly elections.

GPP is the splinter group of BJP with all its leaders and workers having come from BJP owing to their disenchantment with CM Narendra Modi. Zadaphia, who was the minister of state for home in Modi’s government in 2002,quit BJP because of his difference with him and floated MJP.
