Justice Waghela elevated as chief justice of Karnataka HC

One of the sitting judges of the Gujarat High Court,Justice D H Waghela,has been elevated as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court by the Supreme Court.

One of the sitting judges of the Gujarat High Court,Justice D H Waghela,has been elevated as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court by the Supreme Court. Justice Waghela is expected to take oath as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka HC on March 7.

Registrar General of the HC,R P Dholaria,said Justice Waghela had been given farewell on Tuesday by the Gujarat HC and he was to relinquish the charge on Wednesday. “He will take oath as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka HC on March 7.”

Born in August 1954 in Rajkot,Justice Waghela is a commerce graduate. He is among the senior-most judges at the Gujarat HC. He started his legal practice in Rajkot from November 1975. He was elevated as the additional judge of the Gujarat HC in September 1999 and was confirmed as Permanent Judge in June 2001.

Justice Waghela is due to retire in August 2016.

In his recent noteworthy verdicts,Justice Waghela was heading two division benches that ordered CBI probe into the murders of former Gujarat home minister Haren Pandya,and RTI activist,Amit Jethva.

Justice Waghela was also part of a five-judge bench that recently upheld the constitutional validity of the Central government’s Minority Scholarship scheme.
