Eight persons were arrested by the Local Crime Branch (LCB) sleuths of Kheda district on Thursday after they busted an inter-state theft gang that had spread its operations as far as Rajasthan,Madhya Pradesh,Uttar Pradesh,Karnataka and Maharashtra. They recovered various household items worth Rs 80 lakh stacked in different godowns in Ahmedabad,Kheda,Rajkot and Surat districts.
The matter came to light when acting upon a loot case registered at Kheda police station on April 12,a team of the LCB arrested one Sulaiman Kathdi,a resident of Godhra,from a godown at Aslali in Ahmedabad. Kathdi had stored stolen items,including protein powders,spices,ladies clothes and a car worth Rs 34.6 lakh. All these items were stolen from trucks on the Kheda-Nadiad highway.
When we inquired further,we learnt that the accused was a part of a larger gang that was operating in the region whod steal household materials being ferried on trucks on a highway and then carry them to different locations to store them in godowns before selling them off, Kheda LCB Police Inspector M A Choudhary said.
While the accused was handed over to Ahmedabad rural police,the LCB sleuths got a lead to arrest four persons who worked together with Kathdi. The four other accused,Muzaffar Hussain Qureshi,Mustaque Bhagalia,Soeb Bhagalia and Gaurang Patel,led the police to a godown at Mohlel village in Kheda where they had stored boxes full of shaving foam,solution powder,plate box,etc. worth Rs 11 lakh.
On further inquiry,police found that all stolen materials were being transferred to godowns in Anand,Aslali,Ankleshwar and Rajkot. Police arrested Nilesh Patel,Ramesh Patel and Ibrahim Charba in this connection. All eight accused have been sent to police remand till April 21.
