In Vapi, three Congress councillors join BJP

The three sitting councillors of Congress — Raju Patel and Rekha Patel (from Ward no 7) and Nayna Patel (ward no 14) — said they had resigned from the party due to the way it functioned .

Ahead of November 27 civic elections, three miffed Congress corporators, including two women corporators, joined the BJP on Saturday. The three sitting councillors of Congress — Raju Patel and Rekha Patel (from Ward no 7) and Nayna Patel (ward no 14) — said they had resigned from the party due to the way it functioned .

Welcoming the three councillors into the party fold, Vapi unit BJP president Mitesh Desai said, “Impressed by the development works undertaken by the BJP in Vapi, three sitting Congress councillors have joined the BJP. All these three councillors are from ward nos 7 and 14, which had six councillors belonging to Congress. Both the wards are slum dominated areas and majority of its population are migrants. While we welcomed their decision to join our party, we have not assured them that they will be given tickets in coming elections.”

One of the Congress councillors, Rekha Patel, who joined the BJP, said, “We found that no development work has been done in our area. For the betterment of our area, we have decided to join the BJP. There were also differences in the party which forced us to quit.”
Vapi nagarpalika is among 161 nagarpalikas in Gujarat. It is spread over 22.44 square kilometres with a population of 1.63 lakh. As per details, the Vapi nagarpalika elections are round the corner and scheduled to be held on November 27.

Earlier, it was divided into 14 wards with 42 councillors out of which BJP has 35 and Congress 7. After the reorganistaion and 50 per cent reservation for women, the number of wards shrunk to 11.
