The Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) has received the first prize in Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited Design Awards 2015 for “Cost Effective Rural/Urban Housing Including Disaster Resistant Housing.” The award was given away in Delhi on April 25 at the 46th Foundation Day of HUDCO in the presence of M Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of Urban Development, Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation & Parliamentary Affairs. The award was given to IIT-GN for the implementation of earthquake resistant technology in the construction of the institute’s staff housing and hostel buildings. The technology involved in the construction of these buildings was “confined masonry”, where the walls carry the gravity and seismic loads, as opposed to concrete frames where the load is carried by reinforced concrete frame. In addition to improved earthquake resistance, this technology also provides significant cost savings. This construction at the institute is the first large-scale application of the earthquake-resistant confined masonry technology in India. IITGN Director Sudhir K Jain said, “Confined masonry construction has the potential to transform earthquake-resistant construction in India for low-rise residential buildings.”
