The police have booked the driver of the car that ran over a seven-month pregnant woman in Meghaninagar area Sunday for culpable homicide (not amounting to murder).

A speeding WagonR had hit Jasi Rathod (30),a labourer from Rajasthan, killing her on the spot and injuring her two children walking along with her.

The Meghaninagar police have arrested Pragnesh Hargovind Patel (23),who was reportedly driving the car,and booked him for culpable homicide (not amounting to murder) under section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Before Patel surrendered late Sunday night, one of his cousin brothers, identified as Nilesh alias Dinesh Patel, appeared before the Meghaninagar police claiming he was driving the car at the time of the accident. However, locals and eye-witnesses told the police they had seen a much younger boy run out of the car. Nilesh too has been arrested and booked for harbouring an accused.

The accident took place Sunday morning when the victim was returning home after work with her two children,a four-year-old daughter and one-and-a-half-year-old son.

Meghaninagar police said the Maruti Wagon R car GJ 1 HN 7652 that came out of the Ghanshyam Apartments hit the pregnant woman before ramming into an electric post after hitting four vehicles parked nearby. After the accident, the car driver abandoned the vehicle and escaped.

Inspector D A Desai Parmar, who is the investigating officer in the case, said Pragnesh had confessed to his crime.

DCP (Zone IV) M K Nayak said Patel was tracked using the car’s registration details.
