Taking serious note of mistreatment given to the Dandi Bridge in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat High Court on Thursday initiated a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) for the safety and maintenance of the bridge from where Mahatma Gandhi had launched the historic Dandi March in 1930.

A division bench of acting Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya and Justice J B Pardiwala issued notices to the central government,Gujarat government and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC),and asked them to respond in two weeks when further hearing has been scheduled.

At the same time,in an interim order, the court has also directed the authorities to make sure that no further damage is done to the bridge.

On Tuesday, the Dandi Bridge was damaged after a huge garbage was dumped and lit just beneath it. The fire that swirled up seriously damaged the bridge, burning some of its wooden frames. The incident was widely reported in media.

Taking note of those reports,Justice Anant Dave had written to acting Chief Justice of HC Bhaskar Bhattacharya to the effect that the issue is not only of public interest but also of national and international importance. Justice Dave also recommended that the issue is fit for HC to take suo motu cognizance and register a PIL.

Advocate Shalin Mehta, appearing for the HC,said the concerned authority has been asked to explain as to how did the incident of fire happen at the bridge.
