The Gujarat High Court on Monday issued a notice to Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT),which is probing the Gujarat riots,to ascertain and report on the health of former BJP minister Maya Kodnani, who is serving life sentence in the Naroda Patiya massacre case.
The notice comes following the temporary bail application moved by Kodnani for medical treatment as she has been suffering from tuberculosis and depression. She has sought bail for six months for treatment. The court has asked the SIT to find out about Kodnanis health status and revert on November 12 when the matter will be heard again.
Kodnani,58,was admitted to the civil hospital for the second time on October 8 and is under constant medical watch. According to sources,Kodnanis condition remains critical as she is losing almost one kg every month. The Indian Express had reported earlier that Kodnani had been rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of U N Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre on September 21 and was kept there for a week. After various tests, tuberculosis was detected.
Kodnani is serving a life term for her role as a key accused and conspirator in the Naroda Patiya riots case in which 197 people were killed by a violent mob. She is lodged in Sabarmati Central Jails female ward in barrack number 5,along with 11 other convicts.
