The Government of India has provided scholarships worth Rs. 192.41 crores to the students of scheduled castes in Gujarat in the last three years.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Vijay Sampla in Rajya Sabha in reply to a question raised by MP Parimal Nathwani.
In a statement released to the media, Nathwani said that according to the information tabled in the House by the minister, a sum of Rs. 147.66 crore was given under the post-matric scholarship scheme in Gujarat and another Rs. 23.56 crore under pre-matric scholarship.
The minister also stated that Rs. 2.55 crore was also given to Gujarat under Babu Jagjivan Ram Chatrawas Yojana for setting up girls hostel and another Rs. 4.09 crore for setting up boys hostel.
The central government, the minister said, also gave Rs. 43 lakh for upgradation of merit of SC students and Rs. 13.79 crore under pre-matric shcolarship to the children of those engaged in occupations involving cleaning and prone to health hazards in Gujarat.
