The central excise department, Gujarat has started collecting data of transactions made in the last four days from at least 100 jewellers across the state. Officials said that the jewellers have been asked to furnish details of their stocks, sale and transaction of the last four days beginning November 7 to check illegal sale of precious jewelleries in the wake of demonetisation of high-value notes.

Officials in Ahmedabad said the exercise was part of an initiative by Directorate General of Central Excise Intelligence (DGCEI), an intelligence arm under the Finance Ministry. Sources in the excise department said it will take another couple of days to find a trend showing any illegality in the transaction.
