With the BJP facing the ire of Patidars and Dalits ahead of 2017 Assembly elections, senior Congress leaders deliberated here for two days about how to convert the existing political situation in their favour. Among those who attended the meetings included Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel, AICC general secretary Madhusudan Mistry, state party in-charge Gurudas Kamat and party chief Bharatsinh Solanki.
The meetings of leaders from eight nagarmahapalikas and districts since Friday delved into how the party could win the assembly polls in December 2017.
The leaders also deliberated on how to face the challenge thrown by AAP, which is likely to make a dent into the support-base of Congress. Party leaders feel that whatever advantage it can get due to internal fighting of the BJP and Patidar and Dalit agitation, would be neutralised by the AAP factor.
Sources said that most leaders sought to strengthen party organisation in eight cities — Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar and Junagadh — where party network is very weak. State party spokesperson Manish Doshi said party leaders deliberated for four hours on Saturday about strengthening its network.
