Mysteryrevealed Ever since Asaram’s ashram ran into controversy in 2008,following the mysterious deaths of two minor boys, the names of two “mystery” women — Baglo and Dhel,Gujarati for crane and peahen — have cropped up in the probe by a Commission, headed by a retired high court judge. When the Commission was probing the issue, the identity of the two women never got revealed. In fact,an application was also moved before the Commission to summon the two. However, the Commission was informed that there were no such females associated with Asaram’s ashram. The mystery was “solved” recently when two sisters lodged separate rape complaints against Asaram and his son Narayan Sai in Surat. The complaint against Asaram names Baglo and Dhel as two of the eight accused who abetted the crime. The real names of the two women have been revealed: Baglo is Meera and Dhel is Nirmala Lalwani. The two women have also moved quashing petition before the Gujarat High Court.

Preventive measure

Two Congress MLAs from South Gujarat, along with their supporters, were kept under preventive detention by the Gujarat police earlier this week to ensure that a public meeting, addressed by Chief Minister Narendra Modi, went off smoothly. The two MLAs — Chhana Chaudhary of Vasda in Navsari district and Mangal Gavit of the Dangs district — were detained on Monday morning under the suspicion that they might create trouble during Modi’s meeting. Sources said that Ahwa and Vasda police had got information that Congress workers, under the leadership of Gavit and Chaudhary, would barge into Modi’s function and create disturbance. Acting on the tip-off,police picked up Gavit and his supporters from Vaghai when they were on their way to Vasda. Chaudhary was picked up from his house in Vasda. The two were then kept under detention at a lonely place for a few hours till Modi’s public function got over.

Convenient transfers

Transfers of teachers seems to have taken a toll on the routine functioning of the Education Department. Both lower and senior-most administrative officials are flooded with applications for transfers. Majority of such applications carry a covering letter from “influential” references to revert the transfer orders on health or family ground. Though the “affected applicants” may cite different reasons for transfers, the only credible reason seems to be the convenience of home district.

Doubtful deterrence

With Diwali round the corner, the health department of the Ahmedabad Muncipal Corporation (AMC) has become active, raiding sweetshops, particularly those famous for their products and registering good sale. The officials have found adulteration in some of their products. But the little amount of fine, according to AMC staff itself,is not enough to deter them from resorting to such malpractices in future.
