A wary Gujarat government seems to have finally decided to give DIG Rajnish Rai a posting as soon as possible. The government had quietly re-checked Rais annual confidential report in 2011,soon after he filed the explosive affidavit, accusing Amit Shah of trying to derail the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter probe before the Central Administrative Tribunal. The DIG,who returned from a three-year sabbatical at IIM-A in June, had not been given a posting so far.
Rai incurred the wrath of the Modi government in 2007 when he made the first arrests of IPS officers D G Vanzara,Rajkumar Pandian and Dinesh M N in fake encounter cases. Soon after his this feat as a supervisory officer of the investigation in the CID (Crime),Rai was sidelined and his ACR downgraded. He went on to study law and do a PhD at IIM-A and challenged the governments action before CAT.
Rai is also an important witness in the CBIs encounter case probe. Sources say,the government decided to correct his grades in the ACR to avoid prolonging the case in CAT and having details of his affidavit go public. Now,with the Centre yet to respond to his requisition for a deputation, the state government has decided to do the needful.
New Jersey shakedown
Even as Amdavadi brands, that participated in the Global Gujarati Conference 2013 held at Raritan Centre in New Jersey last weekend, were subject to some harrowing mis-managmement issues,it looks like even the NRG segment, which paid $100 for the event, met a similar fate. Rajni Macwan,an NRI Gujarati from New Jersey, responded to a mail from the paper and said,They (the organisers) repeated same dances and singers everyday for three consecutive days. Basically, they were lacking solid content. Juhi Chawla and other stars did not show up for the event. Smriti Malhotra came and left in huff (she was seen arguing with the organisers because she had wanted a photograph of her taken with Modi, and later the organisers did not call her on stage for the lighting the lamp ceremony).
