Marking October as breast cancer awareness month, a meeting was organised here on Saturday by specialist doctors to make people realise the seriousness of the disease.
Named as “Forever Elegant”, the event stressed on the importance of early detection of breast cancer. According to the experts at the event, the worldwide incidence of breast cancer continued to increase with approximately 17 lakh patients being diagnosed every year all over the world. Experts said that it was still a leading cause of deaths quoting WHO data of 2015.
“Breast cancer is one of the most common type of cancer among women in India and it claims thousands of lives every year. Thus, we always stress for early diagnosis for a better outcome,” said senior oncologist D G Vijay of HCG Cancer Centre.
An awareness session on precautionary measures, early detection and periodic screening was also held. Pink Hope, a patient support group, dealt with the issue of insensitive attitude of people towards a cancer patient.
