Gujarat University’s assistant registrar (examinations) M D Pandey, who was holding additional charge for conducting students’ senate elections,on Thursday handed over the additional charge to in-charge registrar Minesh Shah.

Pandey took the decision following criticism from the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) after the nomination of Umang Somani contesting on NSUI platform was rejected on technical grounds. Vice-Chancellor Parimal Trivedi, however, said he had not accepted Pandey’s resignation.

Somani’s nomination form was rejected when the university election officials found it did not bear signature of the college principal where Somani is studying. Though Somani’s nomination form carried the stamp of the principal,it had no signature.

The rejection of Somani’s nomination indirectly resulted in the undergraduate commerce seat going to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad candidate unopposed. This enraged local NSUI and Congress leaders.
