The Water and Sanitation Management Organisation (WASMO),a government implementation agency, launched a free water-test campaign in Patan on Monday. The campaign will go on till January 24,covering 500 villages.
Inaugurating the campaign at Siddhpur,Health and Tourism Minister Jay Naryan Vyas appreciated the efforts of WASMO for spreading awareness about water quality. He lauded the initiative of providing free water testing at the doorstep.
The mobile laboratory van would visit each village/town of the district and the experts would test the water samples on the spot and guide people about region-specific water quality problems and necessary preventive measures.
Wasmos member secretary,Nanak Santdasani, said that the agency plans to cover Patan,Surat,Valsad,Navsari,Dangs and Tapi in a phased manner.
A World Health Organisation survey says 80 per cent of the diseases are water-borne and so testing the quality of drinking water is important for maintenance of public health. It said that people did not bother to check the water quality and if one wanted to have a check, one would have to pay Rs 300 for chemical analysis and Rs 150 for bacteriological testing for public sources.
