The Rajkot police have booked a teacher of city-based A V Parekh Technical Institute (AVPTI) for allegedly raping a 20-year-old student repeatedly over the last nine months after promising marriage and threatening to fail her in internal examination.
A-Division police officials said the teacher,Paras Karia (25),and his parents went missing after a complaint was filed on Saturday. Karia has been charged with rape, blackmail, harassment and issuing threats, while his parents have been booked for supporting him in the crime, they added.
The Karia family has gone missing. Their residence is locked since Saturday. They have switched off their cellphones too, said Investigating Officer inspector A Nayak, adding that police have found a couple of important evidence.
Police said the complaint was registered after the three allegedly threatened the victim and her parents, who belong to Bhavnagar, when they requested them to marry the two to secure the girls future.
According to the complaint, when the girl entered the second semester of her diploma course in computer engineer last year,Karia asked for her cellphone number, which she denied. He later got it from someone else and sent her SMSes asking to meet him or he would fail her in internal examination.
He allegedly forced her to meet at restaurants and later at secluded places near the Nyari dam where he would molest her. The complaint stated that in March last year,he forced her to come to his house when his parents were not around. He allegedly forced her to stay there for three days and raped her. This was followed by visits at a colleagues staff quarter.
The girl said that to win her confidence,Paras married her at a temple near his residence. In last October, she alleged,he called her to his house when his mother was at home, and that his mother also asked her to stay with him in his room.
Later,Paras allegedly told her that he would not marry her,as a result of which the girl attempted suicide by consuming poison at his residence on January 6. Paras, with the help of a colleague, shifted her to a private hospital for treatment. It was only after this her family came to know about the torture, said the police officer.
Police said they have recorded statements of Paras two colleagues, including the one who used to give him the keys of his official residence and another who accompanied him to the hospital. Police have also recorded the statement of the doctor who had attended to her after she attempted suicide. Further investigations are on.
In a similar incident in 2008,a PTC student in Patan was gang-raped by six teachers, who had threatened to fudge marks of her internal examinations. All were awarded life sentence by a fast track court in 2009.
