A sub-inspector with the Special Operations Group of Godhra police opened fire in self-defence in Savli taluka of Vadodara district on Sunday evening. The police had resorted to firing after a wanted criminal,who had jumped parole,allegedly tried to kill the policemen by running over them.
Ketan Patel,accused in several offences,including a loot case in Vadodara and Arms Act related case in Halol,was on the run since he had jumped parole. Acting on a tip-off,SOG officials intercepted a stolen Skoda car,in which Patel was travelling,at Khakharia. On seeing police,Patel allegedly tried to run over the police and even pointed a gun at them. SOG PSI Bhavesh Jadav opened fire from his service revolver injuring Patel in the neck.
He had jumped parole and recently threatened a businessman in Halol. He is also wanted in several other offences,including a loot case at Mannapuram Finance in Vadodara. We got a tip-off that he would pass through Khakharia village on Sunday. When we tried to intercept him,he tried to kill us by running over his vehicle on us and took out a gun and pointed at me. I shot at him from my service revolver in self-defence. He received neck injuries and we rushed him to the SSG Hospital in Vadodara, Jadav told The Indian Express.
A case in this connection has been registered with the Savli police station of Vadodara Rural Police,he added.
According to sources,Patel had approached Panchals car showroom in Halol where his nephew was questioned about some Dhaval. When Panchal intervened,Patel took out a gun and threatened Patel of dire consequence. It was only after Sundays incident,a case was registered for the same.
