Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Ltd (GETCO),a state-owned company, has allegedly refused to vacate the land which was reportedly allotted to Bank of Baroda (BoB).

GETCO is accused of having illegally encroached on the land which District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) has allotted to BoB for construction of a Rural Self-Employment Training Institute at Vyara in Tapi district more than a year ago.

However,GETCO Managing Director Surinder Negi said “he is totally unaware of this”. DRDA Director M K Damor said the agency has done its job by allotting land for the institute and “there is nothing much to be done on its part”.

In a recently held meeting between DRDA and bank officials,Damor said,“The BoB is not taking any initiative in getting free possession of the land and sitting pretty on the allotment.”

He further said the GETCO was given a piece of land in 1972. But without realising that a part of it didn’t fall in the allotted land, the company continued paying taxes for the whole land.

“It went on paying taxes on that land and continued believing that it was in its rightful possession,” Damor said.

When the DRDA allotted the land and the bank officials went to take possession, they found it “encroached” by GETCO,he said.

D H Gamit,an BoB official at Vyara, said the issue was being taken up with GETCO several times, but nothing conclusive was coming out. “The company is regularly paying taxes for the land and therefore, there is no question of the land being termed as encroached,” he said.
