Gautam Navalchand leads Ahmedabad mayor race

The name of Gautam Navalchand Shah, municipal corporator elected from Naranpura ward, has emerged as the most likely nominee of the BJP Thursday as the next mayor of Ahmedabad, sources said.

Incumbent chairman of the Standing Committee Pravin Patel will be continuing for another term, the sources said. This was a part of the decision taken at the state BJP parliamentary board meeting held Thursday.

Apart from Patel, 14 more nominations, including three from Opposition Congress, were filed Thursday for a place in the Standing Committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

Congress has demanded three seats in the committee on the pro rata basis. But the ruling party is not in a mood to oblige.

Those who filed papers for the AMC standing committee membership are: Pravin Patel, Gautam Patel, Jaimini Dave, Gayaprasad Kanojia, Pushpa Mistri, Ishwar Patani, Ila Patel, Girish Prajapati, Bhavna Pandya, Dr Sujay Mehta, Govind Kathiria, Chandravati Chauhan, Jayshree Shah, Govind Parmar and Shehzad Khan Pathan.
