The 266 employees of gas department of Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) will be accommodated in other departments of the civic body when a joint venture company (JVC) of VMC and GAIL comes into existence in about two months.
At present,177 labourers,49 junior clerks,14 engineers,18 mechanical engineers and two Class B officer work for the gas department.
Additionally,the department has 303 pensioners as well.
The civic body intends to wind up its gas department once the JVC,named Vadodara Gas Company Limited,becomes operational.
Raising the issue at the specially-convened meeting General Board of the municipal corporation,former deputy mayor and Congress councillor Chirag Zaveri sought to know the fate of staff serving in the gas department as well those who have retired.
In his reply,standing committee chairman Vijay Shah said all the present staff would be transferred to other departments of the VMC),which will also continue to bear the burden of pensioners.
The civic body had extended the benefits of Sixth Pay Commission to the employees of gas department,which led to an additional burden of Rs 8 crore for VMC.
