MJP chief hopes to ride on resentment among Bhavnagar diamond workers

Gordhan Zadafia, the former election in-charge of the four-time BJP MP Rajendrasinh Rana, will now contest against him from the Bhavnagar seat in the Lok Sabha polls.

Zadafia is currently the president of the Maha Gujarat Janata Party (MJP). A diamond unit owner who began his career as a diamond polisher,Zadafia believes he can take on Rana in Bhavnagar, which has a large share of jobless diamond workers. Several diamonds units in the city have been closed down because of the slowdown in the industry. Home Minister in Narendra Modi’s Cabinet during the 2002 riots,Zadafia parted ways with BJP following differences with Modi’s brand of leadership. Given his vast experience in Bhavnagar region as BJP leader, who began as RSS worker during the Emergency days,Zadafia, for over the past two decades has been the man to rely on for the BJP during the LS elections.

“I will contest against this man (Rana) for whom I was the election in-charge for four contests. But broadly,I will be contesting against the BJP. I am quite okay with the situation as the BJP no longer subscribes to the ideology that had pulled me to it,said Zadafia.

Zadafia, who was mired in controversy for his alleged role in provoking and supporting communal rioters during 2002,hails from Thansa village in Gariyadhar taluka in Bhavnagar district. He won the state assembly polls three times; incidentally all his victories came from Rakhiyal in Ahmedabad and not in Bhavnagar.

“I know each and every corner of the district and its problems. My focus would be on farmers, industries and especially on Alang Ship Breaking Yard and shipbuilding industry,” he said.
