Amid media reports that it is going to give clean to CM Narendra Modi in connection with a complaint lodged by Zakia Jafri,former CM Suresh Mehta has written to R K Raghvan,chairman of SC-appointed SIT,to carry out probe fairly. In a letter,Mehta alleged bias in the SIT probe and accused it of ignoring evidence placed before the National Human Rights Commission and contained in a sting operation shown on a news channel. He also alleged that while the SIT chief is getting a salary of Rs 1.5 lakh per month for his assignment,he is also a board member of the Tatas and is in Gujarat only for four to six days in a month.
Two get 10-yr jail for smuggling arms
A special CBI court in Ahmedabad today sentenced two persons to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with smuggling of arms and waging a war against the country. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 22,000 each on Asabuddin alias Shaukat and Akib Ali Khan. The duo was arrested after the CBI had intercepted a truck laden with arms at Santhalpur in Banaskantha district in October 2001. The consignments included two AK-56 rifles and 524 live cartridges,six AK-56 rifle magazines,10 detonators,six remote timers and 14 kg RDX.
UK trade delegation to visit city
Ahmedabad: A 16-member trade delegation of the UK Trade and Investment and Coventry and Worwickshire Chamber of Commerce,representing the ICT and Media sector,will visit Ahmedabad on January 9-10. The delegation will include a group of companies which offer a wide range of services from hi-tech software and digital animation to forensics and security products. The delegation will hold meetings with key government organisations and private sector businesses.
