A 26-year-old female assistant professor of Wadia Women’s College here committed suicide at her residence Sunday night, apparently because of harassment by colleagues.

According to her family,Varsha Natvarlal Rana had been tense for the past few days. Sunday evening, she locked herself inside her room. Later at night, when her family members knocked at the door for dinner, she did not respond. They also tried calling her on her phone. When there was no response, they peeped through an opening in the window and saw her hanging by a rope from a hook attached to the ceiling.

After being informed, police arrived and broke open the door.

Varsha’s elder brother Chirag told police she was under pressure from her colleagues who were apparently jealous of her for getting an M.Phil degree at such a young age. Varsha was also accused of plagiarism, following which letters were sent to Veer Narmad South Gujarat University from where she had completed her degree.

The university cross-verified her thesis written on the topic “Voice of Women” and found it genuine.

Punagam police inspector M N Parmar said,“We will question her colleagues at the college. After primary investigations,we have found she was driven to the suicide because of harassment and allegations by her colleagues.”
