Shoe bites and skin rashes caused by low quality fabrics will soon become a thing of the past in Gujarat Police,as its modernisation department has tied up with textile and footwear companies to ensure high-quality uniforms and shoes for the orderlies.
The lower-rank policemen have been complaining that they have to buy uniform on their own as those provided by the department are generally of poor quality.
They had reportedly complained several times about the problems they were facing. On an average,a policeman spends anything between Rs 800 to Rs 1,000 on the uniform, which is too expensive for a constable, said an official.
Every year, the policemen get two sets of uniforms. But they complain that the uniforms provided by the department are made of cheap fabrics that give them irritation and rashes, and even stench. The fabric does not absorb sweat, sources said.
Raju Bhargava,DIG,Modernisation Department, said,We have tied up with a few textile companies to make uniforms from a high-quality material dope dyed fabric. The orders have been placed with Sangam Textiles and the new uniforms would be handed over to the policemen in March.
The department has, reportedly, placed ordered for dope-dyed khaki and white fabric shirts with Angola Shirting in Banswada and Polo neck T-shirts from Maharaja Umed Mills.
According to sources, the selected fabrics do not reach the respective police headquarters where these are stored before sending for stitching. Moreover, the department has also placed order for high-quality shoes as the policemen had also complained that those were made of hard leather.
The department has ordered for good quality derby shoes from Liberty,Bhargava added.
