An elderly woman was stabbed to death while her younger sister was injured by two unidentified men who decamped with cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 1.2 lakh from their house in Bhalka area of Veraval in Junagadh district in the early hours of Friday.
The deceased was identified as Chandrika Kadhi (67) and her sister as Aruna (65). They were caretakers of Radhakrishna Temple located opposite their house.
According to the complaint registered by Aruna,two men entered their home from the terrace and tried to decamp with jewellery and cash. When the two sisters resisted,one of the thieves stabbed Chandrika while Aruna was hit on the head and locked inside the bathroom.
Police said Aruna could get help only in the morning when a devotee visited the house. But by that time Charika had succumbed to her injuries.
Police have recovered a knife,a black jacket and a paper napkin reportedly belonging to the assailants. A case of murder and loot has been registered and further investigation is on.
According to the police,the two unmarried sisters,who are heir to the familys huge fortune,had funded the construction of the temple a few years ago.
