A Mumbai-based firm on Thursday started dismantling the 134-year-old Hope Bridge over Tapi river in Surat,a day after the Gujarat High Court dismissed a petition demanding preservation of the structure.

The Surat Municipal Corporation had awarded the contract to H R Qureshi Company. A company official said the work is difficult and risky as the entire bridge and its pillars are rusted. The official said if the bridge is not dismantled in time,it might collapse and damage Nehru Bridge standing beside it. “We are carefully carrying out the work. Our workers, using drill machines to break the walkway, are scared. It will take more than 40 days to dismantle the entire bridge,” said the official.

Sources said the civic body may soon start the process to build a new bridge at the same place in order to reduce traffic problems.
