A newly-married woman from Ahmedabad committed suicide by setting herself on fire on Wednesday, after she had to shift to a village following the closure of the diamond unit her husband had been working in. Preliminary investigations revealed that 22-year-old Pooja Vegda ended her life as she couldn’t adjust herself to the rural life.

The incident occurred at Kukawav village in Vadia taluka of Amreli district. The police said that Pooja set herself ablaze at the couple’s house in the village when her husband,Mukesh, had gone out.

“We are waiting for the post-mortem report, but preliminary reports indicate that Pooja, who was born and brought up in Ahmedabad, desperately wanted to shift back to the city. She was unhappy living in a small village,” the police said.

The couple, who got married five months ago,was forced to migrate after the diamond unit Mukesh was employed with downed its shutters in the wake of global meltdown. According to the police,Mukesh, who hails from Sultanpur village in Amreli, got a job as a diamond worker in Amrapur village, which is close to Kukawav.

The couple had been residing in a one-room house that they took on rent. “The woman’s body was recovered from the same house,” police said.

At least nine diamond workers have committed suicide in Amreli district since last December.
