A diamond trader hailing from Gujarat was stabbed to death in his house in the city of Antwerp in Belgium on Monday by a group of intruders who also injured his son.

The victim,52-year-old-Pravin Patel, also known as Pravin Bhagat and hailing from Bhavnagar district, had been living in Antwerp for the last 15 years.

According to reports,a group of unidentified people barged into his house when he was alone. Bhagat’s wife had left for nearby Swaminarayan Temple while his son was out.

As the attackers were fleeing after killing Bhagat, his son Rashmin returned and challenged them. They reportedly beat him up before making an escape.

Upon seeing his father lying in a pool of blood,Rashmin shouted for help after which neighbours rushed Bhagat to a nearby clinic and informed the police. The news of the killing has shocked diamond traders in Surat, many of whom maintain offices in Antwerp.

Santosh Keria,a representative of Indian diamond traders in Antwerp, said,“We have come to know that the investigating agency has taken away Rashmin for questioning. Nothing was found to be looted from Bhagat’s house. We are giving every possible help to the family of the deceased. We cannot say much till Rashmin returns.”

Surat Diamond Association president Dinesh Navadia said,“We stay in touch with our traders there. We have come to know that incidents of theft of diamonds are on the rise in Antwerp. We have talked to the family members of Pravin Patel there and we are ready to give them assistance.”
