Even as authorities ranging from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to the Gujarat Revenue Minister to the Governor’s office had written to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to keep up the Dandi Bridge, the civic authorities had failed to maintain the bridge that is relic of Mahatma Gandhi’s legacy in Ahmedabad.

This was informed by a petitioner to the Gujarat High Court while seeking to be joined as a respondent to the suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) proceedings initiated by the HC following an incident of fire on the bridge last month.

The petition was moved by one Hemant Chauhan who stays near Gandhi Ashram. One other Dhimant Badhia had also moved a petition seeking to be joined as party to the proceedings over the issue. Both the petitions have been allowed by the High Court while giving directions to the AMC to get the area around the Dandi Bridge cleaned up and cordoned to preempt any untoward incident.

Further hearing on the issue has been kept for next Monday by the court.

Chauhan’s advocate Rashmin Jani said they have produced several evidence to show the negligence shown by the AMC to maintain the heritage bridge. He said they have produced several correspondence done by different authorities with the AMC over the upkeep of the bridge.

“Authorities like PMO,Revenue Minister and Gujarat Pollution Control Board have written to the AMC authorities to maintain the bridge. However, none of them seems to have been taken seriously by them,” Jani said.
