A metropolitan magistrate court here today issued a bailable warrant against Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar.

This is the second time that the court has issued a warrant against Patkar.

The court issued the warrant against Patkar in connection with a defamation case filed against her by the city-based NGO,National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL).

NCCL president V K Saxena had filed the suit against Patkar after she had alleged in a television interview in 2006 that he was “getting civil contracts from the Sardar Sarovar Namada Nigam Limited (SSNNL)”.

The same court had earlier,on January 27,issued an arrest warrant against Patkar, directing the Badwani police to produce her in the court.

The police inspector, however,in his report submitted to the court, that he had visited Patkar’s residence in Madhya Pradesh and was told that she no longer stays there.

The complainant’s advocate contended that Patkar was a “habitual offender” and there were instances where she had “ignored” the summons and orders issued by the court.
