For the first time, the Ahmedabad police will do a crime mapping of the city this month to identify the spots and areas that are more prone to crime than others. The idea was mooted recently after the city witnessed daylight robberies.

The West Zone of the city with its posh localities, malls and banks, has recently witnessed two cases of robbery. In one incident,a builder was robbed of Rs 9.85 lakh outside a bank, and in another, gold worth Rs 90 lakh was stolen by a gang. The industrial areas of Zone IV,V and VI,for instance, record more number of heinous crimes — murder, abduction, assault — than other areas.

The mapping is designed to help police understand the origin of crime, carriers of crime, local aides, network it follows and even new gangs.

DCP (Zone I) Virendra Singh Yadav said,“We have decided to do a crime mapping of the city that will be a handy docket for the police to identify areas as per the nature of crime. Burglaries are reported more in the bungalows off highways and robberies in areas that have more banks. After completing the crime mapping, police officers would be briefed about the way to operate in their areas. A check and balance would be introduced in areas reporting more thefts or robberies. A local network of supervision would be developed to get to the roots of crime.”

After the crime mapping exercise is completed,supervision-cum-patrolling squads would be formed for each police stations. In the crime mapping exercise, the police will first do a geographical profiling, specifying the nature of the area, whether it is residential or commercial, details of locals and their profession, whether more number of businessmen live in that locality. Further,a database would be prepared regarding history-sheeters and absconders.
