Weeks after he kicked up a storm with his remarks that Gujaratis are malnourished because they are vegetarians and because middle-class girls are beauty-conscious,officials of various departments are on their toes preparing for the formal launch of the Gujarat State Nutrition Mission (GSNM) by Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a “sarpanch sammelan” to be held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar on September 18.

Incidentally,the state Health Department had issued a government resolution declaring the GSNM on August 30,the same day the national media printed or broadcast what Modi told the Wall Street Journal in an interview,immediately evoking widespread criticism from political opponents,activists,health experts and some academicians.

Under the GSNM,“society with joint responsibility of Health and Family Welfare Department and Women and Child Development Department” directly headed by the Chief Minister is to be formed to guide mission activities.
