A police constable on witness protection duty at Naroda Patiya allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle at the police headquarters here on Sunday. The constable was reportedly denied leave for the last six months.

The deceased,Kanu Raman Baria (40),was posted at the Ahmedabad Police Headquarters,Shahibaug. He was part of F5 company, also called the force company meant for bandobast and emergency security arrangements.

Police said Baria fired four rounds in the air before shooting himself in the sneck with his .303 service rifle.

Police headquarters officials said Baria was deployed on witness protection programme on Saturday. Earlier,he was posted on guard duty at the residences of IPS officers.

The Madhavpura police, which is investigating the incident, said they are yet to ascertain the reason behind his extreme step. Baria’s colleagues, however, told police that he was disturbed over his seniors’ attitude towards him, they added.

“It is too early to say what triggered this incident. Baria’s colleagues have not told us about any problem that he might have been facing at home or otherwise. We are investigating all the angles and none of the reasons would be overlooked,” said inspector S G Parmar.

Police said the four empty cartridges found near his body suggested that he was probably scared to take this extreme step.

Sources in the headquarters, meanwhile, said that Baria was requesting for leave for the last six months, which was not granted.

“On Sunday too he went to seek leave but his senior inspector screamed at him. He (the inspector) even abused him for coming with a leave request every second day. He was upset over this for the last few months. He even thought of approaching the headquarters chief but he was too scared to do it,” said a constable of his company while seeking anonymity.

Baria was working at the headquarters since he joined the force in the 1990s.

Joint Commissioner of Police Shamsher Singh (Headquarters) said,“Baria was part of our force company that we created in the headquarters. We keep shuffling the duties to ensure none feels that we are prejudiced or practice favouritism. Hence, this time we transferred his company for witness protection.”

Singh added headquarters officials have informed him that Baria had some financial issues. “We have heard that he had some financial problems but we are probing from our side into it,” he said, even as Baria’s wife told the Madhavpura police that they were not facing any financial problems.
