The factory inspector at the cotton ginning factory in Mehsana has asked for the official birth records of the boy who lost his right arm in an accident.

The boy,Anil Bhagora, lost a limb to a charkha machine on February 13 and was taken to a private hospital in Kalol where the orthopaedic doctor marked him as 15 years old.

However,Natubhai N Patel, the factory inspector, said he wished to verify this through birth records and,if those are unavailable, through an age-determination test.

Patel said Anil was employed as a cleaner at the Umapati Ginning and Oil Mill in Kadi,Mehsana district. The tribal boy’s main job which he began only this month was to collect cotton fluffs dropped during ginning operations and stuff them in a bag. His name was also registered as an employee there,Patel added.

If it is proved that Anil is 14 years or younger, the factory owner could face charges of up to a year in prison and Rs. 20,000 as fine under the Child Labour Act,1986.
