The Special Investigation Team today wrapped up the pending files of its probe into the alleged fake encounter of Ishrat Jahan and three others to hand over the case to the CBI,which is likely to begin a fresh investigation this week.

SIT chief R R Verma arrived in Ahmedabad with CBI officers from Delhi, who are likely to be joined by more officers on Friday.

SIT members Satish Verma and Mohan Jha were also present in the SIT office today.

Sources said the SIT has to compile various documents, including progress reports, forensic findings like the details of psychoanalysis of the witnesses,Ahmedabad FSL’s hard disk, photographs, video footage and testimonies of the witnesses and suspects,to hand over the case to the CBI.

They said the file would be handed over to the CBI along with the case papers of previous investigations carried out by DySP Parikshita Gurjar in 2004 and the earlier SIT under Pramod Kumar.

The SIT had submitted its final report to the CBI on December 18 last year, based on which the central agency registered a fresh FIR in the case. Verma had based his report on the original FIR of 2004 filed by a police inspector of the Ahmedabad Crime Branch.

After coming to a conclusion that Ishrat and others were killed in a fake encounter,Verma had,in his report, stated that those persons mentioned in the FIR of Crime Branch as well as those found involved in the case should be booked for abduction, illegal confinement and murder.

SIT’s report was based on forensic reports prepared during the reconstructions and statements of the witnesses.

Among those likely to face probe are former DGP K R Kaushik,suspended cops D G Vanzara,N K Amin,IPS officers P P Pandey,G L Singhal and encounter specialist Tarun Barot.

Ishrat,Javed Sheikh and two others were shot dead by police on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on June 15,2004. The Gujarat Police had claimed that they were LeT terrorists on a mission to kill Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
