The bodies of three youths who drowned in Tapi river on Wednesday afternoon have been fished out by fire brigade officials from the river in Kamrej taluka of Surat district,on late Thursday.

The bodies of the youths have been handed over to their relatives after the postmortem.

Six residents of Bapa Sitaram Nagar in Katargam had gone to visit the temple at Ganteshwar village in Kamrej taluka of Surat district on Wednesday afternoon. Later, they went for a swim in the nearby Tapi river.

Three of them who had gone deep into the river started drowning because of the high tide in the river. The locals rushed to their help when they started shouting, but could not save them.

The Fire Brigade officials from Surat also rushed to the spot and started search operations for the youths’ bodies with the help of a boat.

On Thursday night, the bodies of all the three youths – Prakash Prajapati (21),Naresh Varia (22) and Dilip Prajapati (19) – were fished out. Kamrej police took charge of the bodies and sent them to government hospital for postmortem. On Friday afternoon, the bodies were handed over to their relatives.

Kamrej police sub-inspector PD Vaghela said,“Three youths might have lost their balance due to the high tide in the river and they drowned.”

He said Naresh, one of the three youths who drowned in the river on Wednesday, had got married just a month ago- on February 16.

“We have asked Ganteshwar village sarpanch to prevent people from swimming in the river at the spot and keep a notice board about it near the river bank,” said Vaghela.
