Accusing the BJP of trying to “hijack” Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel for “purely” political gains, the Congress today said that Sardar never politicised temple and did not use religion to gain political mileage neither for himself nor for his party.

Addressing people at the Sardar Sandesh Yatra, which reached Porbandar, state party president Arjun Modhwadia said it was the Congress and Sardar Patel who re-built the Somnath Temple after Independence. “(But) Neither the Congress, nor Sardar Patel,a great icon of the Congress party, ever asked votes in the name of Somnath Temple,” he told the audience.

The Congress leader said that BJP leaders like Keshubhai Patel,Chief Minister Narendra Modi and senior leader L K Advani had entered the Somnath Temple trust through backdoor after the BJP came to power in the state.

He said the saffron party not only used its agenda of Ram Temple at Ayodhya for political benefits but also created social tension and polarised the society along communal lines to create a vote bank throughout the length and breadth of the country.
