The BJP Tuesday recorded a victory by winning 12 taluk panchayat seats out of the 19 and all three district panchayat seats in the bypolls. The Congress only managed to get seven taluka panchayat seats while it did not win any district panchayat.
The bypolls were held for three district panchayat seats – Sabarkantha,Porbandar and Mehsana – and 19 taluka panchayat seats. After the bypoll results,Chief Minister Narendra Modi tweeted,Heartfelt thanks to people of Gujarat for placing their faith in us yet again and rejecting negative politics of Congress.
In a party statement,BJP leader R C Faldu said,The BJP will give more impetus to growth… The outcome shows people in rural areas have made up their mind about going further on the path of development in the leadership of Narendra Modi.
The Congress defeat in Ratiya seat of Porbandar district panchayat should give some uneasy moments to Gujarat Pradesh Congress president Arjun Modhwadia also because Porbandar is his home turf. Modhwadia had already lost Assembly elections from Porbandar last year. However,Modhwadia said this was just a local body election and such elections are contested on local issues. The BJP has used government machinery besides using muscle and money power in these bypolls, he said.
Congress lost Champawadi seat of Vyara taluka in Tapi district that has 70 per cent Christian population. Whereas, the Nalu taluka panchayat seat of Dahod district was won by BJP unopposed.
GPCC spokesperson Manish Doshi admitted there might be some problem that reduced number of already Congress-held seats. But this result need not be taken as popular mandate in favour of BJP. The ruling party with government backing generally wins bypolls, Doshi said.
