The state BJP has objected to the Election Commission’s directive that all candidates in the upcoming Assembly polls must open a seperate bank account and route their election expenses through it.

State BJP’s legal cell headed by Parindu Bhagat has shot off an email to state’s chief electoral officer (CEO) Anita Karwal.

“Even a cheque book issued by a bank takes at least a week to be delivered. How does the EC expect us to have a bank account ready and activated in a day’s time. Also, the Representation of the People Act,1951,does not seem to have any such provision. Generally, names of candidates from each constituency are declared at the last moment. How,then, can we get a new bank account ready in a day’s time?” said Bhagat.

“Candidates in rural areas where banking is still a slow process will face even greater a problem. Also, bank accounts these days have to be opened in person and not in proxy, hence it would be difficult for the candidate to campaign for his party and take care of such legalities at the same time,” Bhagat said.
