The BJP on Monday captured the Porbandar nagarplalika with support from three Congress members and one independent
Of the total 42 councillors in the board,38 cast their votes for the elections to the posts of president and vice-president of the civic body. BJP candidates Pankaj Majethia and Nileshbhai Kishor, for the posts of president and vice-president respectively, polled 24 votes each. Their Congress rivals,Lalji Panjari and Devshi Parmar respectively, polled 14 votes each.
Sources said while there was cross-voting by three Congress councillors, another four remained absent. Congress councillor Ihu Shiyal could not participate in the voting, citing ill-health.
The lone independent member, who had earlier supported Congress, voted in favour of BJP.
In the 42-member Porbandar municipality,BJP has 20 and Congress 21.
The Congress-ruled civic body was superseded by the Urban Development Department after it failed to pass the budget three times in a row.
The Congress had challenged the decision in the High Court in April 2013. A mid-term election could not be held because of the court stay in June.
However, the government revoked the supersession earlier this month, paving way for the revival of the original body.
Incidentally,a case seeking disqualification of three Congress councillors who allegedly changed loyalty to BJP is pending with the Gujarat High Court.
