The National Investigation Agency (NIA) lodged a fresh FIR on Sunday in connection with the murder of two BJP leaders in Bharuch, formally taking over the case.
The FIR was lodged at NIA’s Mumbai office, which has jurisdiction in Gujarat. A team of NIA officials also reached Bharuch Sunday.
According to Bharuch police, ASP Namrata Patil and others were handed over the case papers and also the custody of nine accused. The custody of two remaining accused Abid Dawood Patel and his close aide Salim Ghanchi will be given after December 11 since they are in the custody of local police as granted by the district court.
“We have almost solved the case as far as the Bharuch incident is concerned. But, it has a national ramification as similar methods have been used elsewhere. We have established that underworld gangsters, assisted by anti-nationals on foreign soil, are targeting politicians belonging to a particular ideology in order to create communal hatred in the country,” said an official involved in the investigation.
Shirish Bangali, former Bharuch district BJP president, and Pragnesh Mistry, general secretary of the Bharuch BJP youth wing, were shot dead at the former’s Surya printing press in Panchbatti area of the town by masked assailants on the evening of November 2.
