A special court on Wednesday granted three months time to National Investigating Agency (NIA) for filing chargesheet in the double murder of Bharuch BJP leaders. There are 12 accused in the case who claimed to have killed the two leaders for “avenging atrocities against Muslims.”
The special judge P B Desai allowed three months time to NIA for filing the chargesheet.
Defence lawyer Iliyas Pathan said that it was a mere formality since the accused have been booked under Unlawful Activities (prevention) Act (UAPA) which enables the agency to file the chargesheet in 180 days instead of 90 days of stipulated period.
The case was initially investigated by local Bharuch police and Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), which arrested 11 persons for killing Shirish Bangali, former Bharuch district president, and Pragnesh Mistry, general secretary of Bharuch BJP youth wing, on November 2 last year.
The ATS claimed that the double murders were result of contract killing perpetrated allegedly by fugitive gangster Javed Chikna and other gang members of Dawood Ibrahim Kaskar. Javed’s brother, Abid Patel, has also been arrested in the case. They all are in jail in judicial custody.
