The state government’s “best school principal” award winner Dewang Desai, who is facing charges of harassment by teachers of his school, was suspended on Thursday evening. He was the principal of Sarvajanik Education Society-run Experimental School.

Desai, who has also written SSC textbooks, was surrounded by many controversies for the last few months. Several teachers of Experimental School,in a complaint to the Sarvajanik Education Society trustees, had alleged that the principal mentally harassed them and would send them awkward SMSes during odd hours.

On April 25,the school authorities had slapped a temporary suspension order on Desai and formed an inquiry committee headed by Dinkarrai Naik, former president of the Education Society.

Sources said the teachers had made 14 complaints in all against Desai.

Later,Surat District Education Officer (DEO) Dinesh Patel had met the inquiry committee and spoken to the complainant teachers and Desai.

On Thursday,Patel gave clearance to the suspension order issued by the school authorities.

Sarvajanik Education Society president R G Shah said,“We are happy that the DEO has endorsed our decision. In future,no principal will dare to do such things with teachers.”

Desai, however, said,“I am not satisfied with the documents presented by the inquiry committee and teachers before the DEO.”

Desai won adjudged the best principal award in 2010 by the state government.
