Sabarmati Central Jail authorities said on Wednesday that action would be taken against staff members,if found guilty of negligence, over an altercation between Naroda Patiya convict Babu Bajrangi and serial bomb blasts accused, which took place at the jail dispensary on Tuesday.
The jail superintendent,in a release, denied reports of there being any assault on Bajrangi and said it was only an ordinary verbal duel.
Earlier,it was reported that Bajrangi was assaulted by prisoners when he allegedly abused them for not letting him go first to attend the doctor in the dispensary.
Bajrangi was arrested and lodged in Sabarmati jail on August 31 along with 30 others, including former MLA Maya Kodnani.
The incident happened near the dispensary of the jail when Bajrangi along with three riot convicts and four Ahmedabad serial blast accused were waiting in the queue for a check-up. Bajrangi however wanted to get his check up done first, sources from the jail said.
Superintendent (Jails) R J Pargi said,Bajrangi is a patient of diabetes and his regular check-up was scheduled for Tuesday. He was waiting in the queue to give his blood and urine samples. From what we have gathered,Bajrangi and others got into a spat and abused each other.
The jail officials said Bajrangi allegedly got into a fight with the Ahmedabad serial blast accused who were also in the queue and made some objectionable comments on them. This reportedly infuriated the blast accused who got into an argument with him.
The sources said when the chaos got out of control, senior jail officials rushed to the spot to control the situation.
Pargi said,We have ordered an inquiry to know why in the presence of jail guards the situation turned uncontrollable. More than 10 guards were present there who had accompanied the prisoners to the dispensary for the check-up.
